Goliath Must Fall! (ISRAELI INDEPENDENCE)
May 14th, 2010: Israel celebrates 62 years of rebirth today. She is the first nation to ever be reborn. This is a powerful testimony to the Adon Hakavod (The L-rd of Glory; Psalm 24:8).
We must not get lost in the festivities; the watchmen must remain vigilant on the walls of Jerusalem (Isaiah 62:6) because the spirit of Goliath has also been reborn to challenge the City of King David. This time this uncircumcised Philistine has left the Valley of Gad to make his final stand on the Mount of Megiddo.
Isaiah 62:6: I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
There are several distinctive characteristics that will enable us to identify the spirit of this ageless combatant:
1. UN-CIRCUMCISION IS SYMBOLIC OF AN ANTI-COVENANT PEOPLE:
… who is this “uncircumcised” Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? (1 Samuel 17: 26): This was a priority question for David when he assessed the threat of Goliath and the necessity for taking away the reproach/ disdain of Israel.
The circumcision is symbolic of G-d’s covenant with His people (Gen 17:9-11). From the gift of dominion in Eden (Gen 1:26; Psalm 8:6); to the Abrahamic promises that are the Judaic foundation (Genesis 12: 1-3;15:8; Acts 3:24-26; 1Cor 15:45); to the New Covenant of Yeshua (Hebrews 7: 21 & 22); It has always been about the covenant.
When David stepped on the battlefield he was not dressed in the kings armament he was dressed in the understanding of the particulars of his covenant with God. David was also unwavering in his confidence that God is a covenant keeping God to all that walk in covenant with Him. In later life he penned his powerful faith throughout the Psalms that he wrote:
Psalm 105: 8- 10: 8. He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. 9. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; 10. And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:
G-d is not a man that He should lie, He will be faithful to His covenant:
Numbers 23:19: God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
2. GOLIATH ATTACKED THE SHEMA, SO THE SOLDIERS COULD NOT GET DRESSED:
Rabbinical literature show us that Goliath challenged and cursed the Israelites every morning and every evening, so as to disturb them at the hour set for reciting the Shema. The Shema is the prayer that is recited twice daily by adult male Jews to affirm their faith. Their religious life is upheld by their prayers, as it should be for all people of faith.
Goliath knew that if he could destroy their prayer life then the army of the L-rd would not be able to get dressed in the spiritual authority that they needed to win the battle. David was not subjected to this disruption since he still had the peace of the wilderness of Jerusalem where he tended his father’s sheep. (1Sam 17:15)
We will never defeat Goliath if we allow him to destroy our Shema and thus destroy the identity of our spirituality. Ephesians 6: 10 -18 calls for us to get dressed in spiritual armor so that we can stand firm in the day of evil. In today’s world, it is amazing how many people love the pomp and pageantry of armor bearers but really have no armor on.
3. GOLIATH’S ILLEGITIMATE BIRTH IS SYMBOLIC OF HIS BEING OF DEMONIC SEED:
The name “Goliath” is probably connected with the Assyro-Babylonian “Guzali” = “running, ravaging spirits,” “destroyers”. Goliath’s mother was Orpah, the daughter in law of Naomi (Ruth 1:14- 18). Ruth distinguished herself by her faithfulness to her mother in law in a time of famine and need while Orpah kissed her mother in law good bye and returned unto her gods and people.
In Rabbinical literature Orpah is also called Harafa which translates from Hebrew to mean threshing as it is said that she allowed herself to be “threshed” by many men as one would “thresh” wheat. Rabbinic literature further tells us that it is uncertain of who is the father of Goliath and his four other giant brothers. Many scholars strongly believe that Orpah/ Harafa in her loose living may have mated with the Nephilim (Genesis 6:4).
What is even more important than the exact particulars of Goliath’s birth, is exactly what he represents yesterday and today as a demonic being. So the warfare that must be waged will not be one of flesh and blood:
Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
