In The Belly Of The Beast

I had a great day in DC with thousands of my closest friends. We were there because Congresswoman Michelle Bachman had the audacity last Friday to call on Americans to come to the nation’s capital and let her fellow legislators hear how the citizens are rejecting the nationalization of our health care system. She did not know how people would respond… but they did, and in numbers beyond her expectation.

Many congressmen and women joined Ms. Bachman and commented ad nauseum about the crisis facing our country. I would like to believe they were all of the same mind, but we need to keep an eye on some of them to be certain as some politicians tend to be opportunistic and slippery types. Other personalities were present lending their support. Some unusual opportunities presented themselves, for instance, Bo Snerdley, Mark Levin and Jon Voight can now go back to their friends and tell them they they shook my hand. I’m sure it was the high point of their visit… well maybe not. ;-)

The point was made over and over in many and varied ways that our country, the United States of America was a gift we received from our ancestors and the founding fathers who sacrificed so much in giving independence to our land. Others built on this gift in the sands of Normandy and the hills of Iwo Jima… and at countless locations throughout the world over our two hundred plus year history. This gift was a land where we could be what we wanted to be and do what we wanted to do. Now we have people who are trying to wrest this gift from us… and we won’t let it happen. They do not understand the sleeping giant they have awakened with their assaults on our freedoms and values.

In a way, it may be good that we have this administration trying to foist their socialist/fascist schemes on us as quickly as they have since we have been easing down this path for decades, but at a pace that caused little or no alarm among the average Joes. What is happening to us now is like a splash in the face with cold water. We were jolted awake and, quite frankly, are ticked off about it.

Most of us have lived our lives peacefully, trying to mind our own business. We are not trouble makers or boat rockers by nature. We believe in law and order, respecting authority and, in general, just want to be left alone. This is what those who would be our masters have seen and are counting on.

As we seek to go about our quiet lives, we need to remember something sixties radical Abbie Hoffman told us, “Respect for authority will be the downfall of democracy.” He understood that if the radicals could gain control of the levers of power, most people would just fall into line and go along, complaining some perhaps, but not fussing too much. He, and his friends like Presidential consort and Pentagon bomber, Bill Ayers believed that if they could get a hold on the institutions we respected, we would follow them, even to our detriment.

Our job, is to prove them wrong… the alternative being to roll over and play dead while they destroy our country. Our job is to preserve our country for our families and our friends. Each of us are on the earth at this point in time to do the job before us. It is both a responsibility and honor. Up until now, it hasn’t cost us much… perhaps some time… maybe a little money. Someday soon the stakes may be raised. Are we prepared… and do we know how we will respond? Will we rise to the challenge or will we give in and do as Mark Levin said, tell our grandchildren “what it was once like in the United States when men were free”? May this never be!
